Learning Cycle

Privacy statement

Draft. This statement is being reviewed and may change before the pilot opens.

In short

Learning Cycle is a small, invite-only pilot. We keep only what we need to plan your learning, remind you, and show you your own progress. Your entries, notes and progress are yours: no one else can read them in the app. There are no ads and no analytics. Videos play through YouTube, which has its own privacy terms (see below).

What we collect

When you use Learning Cycle, we store:

  • Your email address, so you can sign in and get your daily nudge.
  • Your display name, your focus area and the time you chose for your daily nudge.
  • Your time zone. In the pilot it is always West Africa Time.
  • Your log entries: what you learned, and, if you add them, the time you spent, your reflection and your mood. We also store the date of each entry and when you created or last changed it.
  • A record of each daily nudge we try to send you: when it was due, and whether it was sent, delivered or bounced. It does not include your email address.
  • Whether your account is active, your nudges are paused, or your account is deactivated.
  • Your learning plan: the skills you chose, your level, your goals, your learning days, daily and weekly targets, reminder choices and theme.
  • Your progress: which lessons you opened and completed and when, your stage check scores, and the time each completed lesson or video adds to your learning time.
  • Your lesson notes, the lessons and videos you save, and any recommendation you report as unhelpful.
  • For videos you watch here: the video's ID, title, channel and thumbnail, and how far you watched, so you can resume and so watching counts toward your progress.
  • If you turn on notifications: the address your browser gives us for delivering them, and a record of which reminders we sent on which day.

Cookies and technical data

We use a few cookies that keep you signed in. While you wait for a sign-in link, we also keep your email address in a cookie for 15 minutes, so the next page can show where we sent it. We don't use advertising or analytics cookies.

When something breaks, an error report goes to Sentry, a service that helps us fix bugs. These reports do not include your email address, your log entries, your cookies or your IP address. They may include the internal number that identifies your account.

The companies that host Learning Cycle keep short-lived technical logs, such as the time and IP address of requests, to keep the service running and secure.

Videos are embedded with YouTube's privacy-enhanced player (youtube-nocookie.com). When you play a video, YouTube (Google) receives your IP address and device information under Google's privacy policy. Video searches are sent to YouTube from our server, not from your browser, and don't include your name or email.

Notifications are delivered through your browser's push service (for example Google, Mozilla or Apple). The message content is encrypted; the push service sees only that a message was delivered.

How we use it

We use your information only to run Learning Cycle for you: to sign you in, to build your roadmap and daily plan, to recommend videos for your next lessons, to send the reminders you chose, and to show you your own progress, streak and weekly review.

We don't sell your information. We don't use it for advertising. We don't send you marketing email.

Who can see what

Learning Cycle is built so that no one can see your entries through the app, including our team. As the operator, Daystar has technical access to the database and backups for maintenance. We don't read your entries unless you ask us to help with something specific, or the law requires it.

There are no public profiles. Other members can't see your name, your focus area or whether you logged today.

The people who run Learning Cycle can see account details such as your email address, name, focus area, nudge time and nudge delivery records, so they can help you and fix problems.

We use a few companies to run the service: Supabase stores the data and handles sign-in, on servers in Ireland. Vercel hosts the app. Resend sends our emails. Sentry receives error reports. YouTube (Google) provides video search and playback. Your browser's push service delivers notifications if you turn them on. They handle data only to provide their service to us.

How to export your logs

Go to Settings and choose “Export my data”. You get a spreadsheet file (CSV) with every journal entry: the date, what you learned, time spent, reflection, mood, and when each entry was created and last changed. The export does not yet include lesson progress, notes or saved items; ask us and we will send them to you.

How to delete

To delete one entry, open it and choose “Delete this log”. It is removed straight away and can't be undone. Your streak and monthly count update to match.

To take a break, go to Settings and choose “Deactivate account”. Your nudges stop and your data stays. Sign in again whenever you like and everything is back.

To delete your account for good, go to Settings, choose “Delete my account permanently…”, and type your email address to confirm. You are signed out straight away.

How long we keep things

We keep your account, entries, progress, notes and saved items for as long as you have an account. Turning notifications off removes that browser's notification address.

When you delete your account, we remove your profile, all your entries and every other record linked to you, usually within minutes and always within 7 days. Encrypted backup copies are kept for up to 7 days, so after 7 days no copy of your data remains.

Nudge delivery records and reminder records are deleted after 35 days. Resend keeps a record of each email it sends, including your address, for 30 days. Sentry deletes error reports after 30 days.
